What Does A Music Producer Do and Why Do You Need One?

Many people wonder what a music producer is and what functions it has in the process that leads to the making of a record, a song or the recent EP (Extended Play or short disc). Let’s talk about how the perspective and experience from music producers can influence the quality of an artist and know a bit more of this key role “Behind the scenes” in the music industry.

A music producer basically works in all stages of the album as an active collaborator. Therefore, a music producer has both, creative and administrative responsibilities. A producer has different roles: controlling recording sessions, instructing and guiding musical performers in the recording process, gathering project ideas, directing creativity, supervising recording, mixing, and performing the mastering process.

In the music industry, there are two kinds of producers: the executive producer and the music producer. These have different roles; while the executive producer is the financial manager of the project, the music producer is responsible for the music and the final product.

But… What Are Exactly the Responsibilities of a Producer?

Among the creative responsibilities that are part of the job of a good musical producer are: the authorship or co-authorship of the songs, while knowing the musical influences of the artist and the evolution they had in previous works (if there are any at all), the necessary instrumental and vocal arrangements and knowledge and understanding of the recording and mixing process.

In addition to these responsibilities, there are others of an administrative nature, such as the management of the budget of the disc, coordination of schedules of the recording studios, session musicians, mixing and mastering; also, the choice of the musicians and suitable personnel for the making of the disc, compilation of credits of all the people involved in the project.

And also other additional responsibilities, but not less important like: Understanding and maintaining the vision of the project throughout the process, reconciling the peace between the different people involved in the record in case of any disagreement, capturing the moments of creativity while dedicated to meet the artist’s strengths and limitations, musical genre, and deciding on the right tone for each song, among other details.

Then, there are more ethereal responsibilities, like recognizing a magical moment while it’s happening and capturing it, being able to make decisions (one of the most difficult and important tasks), taking care of making good use of the resources, also providing a creative and comfortable environment for the artist, knowing the terms related to music, instruments, recording, equipment, etc. while cultivating the ability to have a good ear for the mix.

An excellent music producer is capable of exercising a subtle but recognizable influence that can shape the creation of a unique sound or style in the artist he’s working with, these are the ones who go into the annals of history as the true heroes behind the music and artist we all love.

The work of the music producer can be perceived as not very valued, since most of the people in a song read the name of the singer and have the reference that the song belongs to the artist and forgets or ignores all the other work, enthusiasm and effort behind a song, all of it being responsibility of a producer who puts in blood, tears, and sweat to make that song.
